Old Heart Butte IHS Clinic
The Old Indian Health Service Clinic site is located in Heart Butte, Montana on the west bank of South Fork Whitetail Creek. The property is
located in Pondera County, Montana. The property is bound to the north, west, and south by former government buildings and to
the east by the South Fork Whitetail Creek and residences. The property lies at Government Square. The parcel is located in Township 29 North, Range 9 West, Section 7.
In this report, “subject property” refers to the approximately ˝ acre parcel including the demolished buildings, the adjacent dump site, and up to the bank of the South Fork Whitetail Creek.
The subject property is located in north central Montana, approximately 50 miles south of the US border with Canada. The Old Clinic site
sits at the base of the Rocky Mountain Front, east of the Continental Divide, on the west bank of the South Fork Whitetail Creek. The site was developed as a health clinic for the Blackfeet Nation
by the Indian Health Service (IHS). The buildings were demolished after a newer clinic was erected.
The Old Clinic site consists of two demolished buildings, with one foundation still intact, and a dump site. The property backs up to the intermittent South Fork of Whitetail Creek. A community
building is located adjacent to the south and a residential structure is located to the north of the subject property.
The environmental concern at this site consists of: asbestos-containing material and lead-based paint, trash and debris, Mercury amalgam washed down in the sewer systems.
