What is illegal dumping?
Illegal dumping is the unlawful disposal of commercial and industrial waste in places other than permitted facilities such as landfills or transfer stations. Garbage is usually dumped along roadways, vacant lots and on tribal, public and private lands. If you see someone littering or dumping waste you should tell them to stop immediately, or report them to the authorities listed at the bottom of this page.
Reasons for illegal dumping:
-Lack of respect for the people
-Lack of respect for the land
-Lack of convenient legal dump sites
-Increasing disposal costs
-Lack of public awareness about the issue
-Lack of understanding of Tribal Laws prohibiting these activities
What are the Health & Safety risks associated with illegal dumping?
-They contain broken glass, syringes, toxic & hazardous waste which may cause sickness and injury
-They attract mice, mosquitoes and other rodents & inscets which may cause sickness
-They pollute our lakes, creeks & rivers which causes flooding and injury to people, fish & wildlife
-They contain tires and other fire hazards
-They attract more dumping
-They attract other illegal activities
-The decrease pride in our communities
Laws against illegal dumping
Fines & pentalties may be assessed for illegal dumping by order of Blackfeet Solid Waste Ordinance 105.
